A Call to Action

Hi Friends – I hope my letter finds you well.

I recently finished writing a song about change.  The song is about a revolution – but not in the traditional sense.

Our world has changed tremendously over the last decade; it is a very different place now. Consider how connected we are in real time global communication, with social networking - Facebook, twitter, linked-in, YouTube, etc – the world is becoming very small – very quick.  News is instantaneous now and as such the truth is able to make its way to light much faster than it has ever done before.  Things are in high gear everywhere & there is so much positive change brewing.  Folks across our nation and around the globe are coming out of the woodwork by the tens of thousands, and what’s more – they are ready and willing to take a stand.  (In a musical realm, check out the work being done by http://difrent.org/.)

I would like to invite you and your friends to be a part of the music video that is being filmed for this song.  It will be in Austin, TX on Sunday June 10th (9am-11am).  Folks near and far are invited to join.  If you’re interested, I’d love to hear from you.  I will follow up soon with exact location details, etc.

Come one come call, ER isn’t black – it isn’t white, it’s not blue or red; it’s human.  Our goal is to encourage unity, build trust in humanity, and inspire people everywhere to stand up for their rights; grassroots-like yo!

Justice for all!

it’s furniture art,
it’s the sure way to go.

Cat Stands?

Last year our family got a cat – a Bengal. Crazy, she was. *Yoda style.* We quickly discovered she needed some space – a place of her own where she could get her wild out. We read that Bengals (and other cats) like to be in a high spot, higher than anything else in the house. She needed a cat stand; a tall one. Going to PetSmart, PetLand or PETCO wasn’t an option. We’re not fans of the traditional stands, design-wise. Aside from that – they’re made from mass manufactured materials which aren’t so good for our environment. Long story short… I made one; a tall one that became her very own cat paradise.

Fast forward. There’s ship builders and there cat stand builders.  I’ve decided to be a cat stand man. Come check em’ out – and pass the word!

Lytle Animal Care & Control – Making a Big Difference.

Recently, a member in the community of Lytle, TX whom aids in the adoption of sheltered animals contacted me about a video they were working on. They’d come across one of my songs through one of the creative commons music networks I distribute my music to. It was requested that the song “To Love Again” be used as music for the video. I’m honored to be able to be part of your work Lytle, TX; thank you helping the animals.

Break my guitar, huh?

A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500).

Dave spent over nine months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar.

During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for YouTube exposing their lack of cooperation.  The Manager responded “Good luck with that one, pal”.

So he posted a retaliatory video on YouTube.  The video has since received over 9.5 million hits.  United Airlines contacted the

musician and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video.  Naturally his response was “Good luck with that one, pal”.

Taylor Guitars has since sent the musician two new custom guitars in appreciation for the product recognition from the video that has led to a sharp increase in orders.

Google Anatomy… A Reality?

Last May I posted here about a letter I’d sent to Google back in October of 2008 regarding the idea of creating a map of the human body, similar to Google Earth. Well… it’s here, it’s BETA & requires Google Chrome BETA (HTML 5 support) – but it is WAY WAY AMAZING! The best part is that Google has offered to pay me $10,000 for the idea! *dream on* :)

The Moment of Truth: Report of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform

The following is the preamble to today’s released “Report of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform”.  The guts of the report are here. As Mr. Dylan put it a few years back, “The Times They Are A-Changin“. Slow, but steady.

My appreciation goes to all that put their efforts into creating this; thank you.

Preamble
Throughout our nation’s history, Americans have found the courage to do right by our children’s future. Deep down, every American knows we face a moment of truth once again. We cannot play games or put off hard choices any longer. Without regard to party, we have a patriotic duty to keep the promise of America to give our children and grandchildren a better life.

Our challenge is clear and inescapable: America cannot be great if we go broke. Our businesses will not be able to grow and create jobs, and our workers will not be able to compete successfully for the jobs of the future without a plan to get this crushing debt burden off our backs.

Ever since the economic downturn, families across the country have huddled around kitchen tables, making tough choices about what they hold most dear and what they can learn to live without. They expect and deserve their leaders to do the same. The American people are counting on us to put politics aside, pull together not pull apart, and agree on a plan to live within our means and make America strong for the long haul.

As members of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, we spent the past eight months studying the same cold, hard facts. Together, we have reached these unavoidable conclusions: The problem is real. The solution will be painful. There is no easy way out. Everything must be on the table. And Washington must lead.

We come from different backgrounds, represent different regions, and belong to different parties, but we share a common belief that America’s long-term fiscal gap is unsustainable and, if left unchecked, will see our children and grandchildren living in a poorer, weaker nation. In the words of Senator Tom Coburn, “We keep kicking the can down the road, and splashing the soup all over our grandchildren.” Every modest sacrifice we refuse to make today only forces far greater sacrifices of hope and opportunity upon the next generation.

Over the course of our deliberations, the urgency of our mission has become all the more apparent. The contagion of debt that began in Greece and continues to sweep through Europe shows us clearly that no economy will be immune. If the U.S. does not put its house in order, the reckoning will be sure and the devastation severe.

The President and the leaders of both parties in both chambers of Congress asked us to address the nation’s fiscal challenges in this decade and beyond. We have worked to offer an aggressive, fair, balanced, and bipartisan proposal – a proposal as serious as the problems we face. None of us likes every element of our plan, and each of us had to tolerate provisions we previously or presently oppose in order to reach a principled compromise. We were willing to put our differences aside to forge a plan because our nation will certainly be lost without one.

We do not pretend to have all the answers. We offer our plan as the starting point for a serious national conversation in which every citizen has an interest and all should have a say. Our leaders have a responsibility to level with Americans about the choices we face, and to enlist the ingenuity and determination of the American people in rising to the challenge.

We believe neither party can fix this problem on its own, and both parties have a responsibility to do their part. The American people are a long way ahead of the political system in recognizing that now is the time to act. We believe that far from penalizing their leaders for making the tough choices, Americans will punish politicians for backing down – and well they should.

In the weeks and months to come, countless advocacy groups and special interests will try mightily through expensive, dramatic, and heart-wrenching media assaults to exempt themselves from shared sacrifice and common purpose. The national interest, not special interests, must prevail. We urge leaders and citizens with principled concerns about any of our recommendations to follow what we call the Becerra Rule: Don’t shoot down an idea without offering a better idea in its place.

After all the talk about debt and deficits, it is long past time for America’s leaders to put up or shut up. The era of debt denial is over, and there can be no turning back. We sign our names to this plan because we love our children, our grandchildren, and our country too much not to act while we still have the chance to secure a better future for all our fellow citizens.

Office Cubicle Trash Bags: A Simple Pollution Solution

Every evening in my workplace, shortly after 5PM, the Jani-King feller with his headphones on, comes by and strips the white plastic bag (empty or not) from the little industrial plastic trash can in my office cubicle.  He  then quickly replaces it with another white plastic trash bag and heads to the next cube to dispose of another empty trash bag to be replaced by a new empty trash bag… and on and on until the entire buildings day old plastic trash bags have been refreshed with new trash bags.  There is no consideration as to if the current one is completely unused, or might only have a piece of crumpled paper in it. (the fact that there is paper in there to begin with is a whole different topic – of which I’ll not delve into now)

One might offer “Biodegradable or Recycled Trash Bags” as a solution.  Although biodegradable bags are much more environmentally friendly and can decompose in 10-45 days – they incur tons of overhead.  Recycled trash bags are also more environmentally friendly than non-recycled trash bags – yet they still take 100 years to decompose.

One might suggest the “empty when full” or “empty when required” or “use best judgment” method, but would then assuredly find themselves dealing with the Bureau of I’m Gonna Sue You, cause you can bet there’s someone whose going to complain that they got sick because of some banana peel that smelt bad.  Talk about a waste of time & money.

Some might go as far to say “no more trash can liners”… YUK.  Can you imagine?  Better invest in some pressure washers.

How about suggesting something like making folks get up from the cubicle and walk to a shared trash can, where right next to it are recycling bins for plastics & paper.  Sue me for that one; I dare you.  I’ll come back at you with a mean case of here’s the new company policy that states you need to get up and walk a few times a day due to the recent findings linking sitting at a computer all day to thrombosis.  Not to mention failure to comply with the “quit wasting company resources” policy that I just put into effect along with the fact that you’re in direct violation of the Formal Code of Ethics on Healthy Living and Environmental Friendliness.

I’ve worked for several large corporations and am amazed in this day in age how some still go through petroleum based plastic trash bags every day.  The global numbers would be gut wrenching.  I’d be willing to bet that on a daily basis, you could fill the world cup stadium to the brim with the amount of plastic trash bags that are tossed into landfills around the globe.  Think about it – just the company I’m at, 1 of its over 40 locations will generate at least 20-30 lbs (roughly 1 or 2 square ft.) of empty or nearly empty trash bags.  40-80 square feet for this company alone – and we’re small in comparison to the tens of thousands enterprise corporations out there.  Sickening.  Of course some critic writing for The Devil’s Advocate will come along and make nonsensical comments like “the bags weren’t compacted – there’s no way it would fill the that many square feet.”  Right on; he’s missing the point entirely.

I realize not all companies work this way and that there are in fact many who do utilize centralized locations, do have recycling available and many who even use the “empty when full” or “empty when stinky” methods.  The point here is that there are still many, many companies throughout the world that for whatever reason or policy… continue to waste millions of plastic trash bags.

So how bout it – take the cans away from the cubes and desks and make centralized departmental bins available?

Careful not to be too careful…

This has been circulating the internet for some time now via email & blogs; got it from my mom today :)  To whomever wrote this; I thank you.

To all the kids who survived the 1930′s, 40′s, 50′s, 60′s and 70′s:

  • First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
  • They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.
  • Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.
  • We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.
  • As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.
  • Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
  • We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.
  • We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
  • We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren’t overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING !
  • We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
  • No one was able to reach us all day and we were O.K.
  • We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
  • We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD’s, no surround-sound or CD’s, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms…….
  • WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
  • We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
  • We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
  • We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
  • We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!
  • Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
  • The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned… HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them . . . CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn’t it?!

"Keep'n it Real" – Stop The Media Madness

Balance in all things is necessary.  The problem with much of today’s media is that for many folks, balance has gotten way out’a whack.  Balance isn’t even a factor for some.  The unfortunate thing is that in general, people don’t realize this… and what’s worse is that the media crafts it this way intentionally.  There’s a thing that the media organizations keep very private about their mind-numbing, emotionally seductive influences that are constantly being flooded out over the airwaves and into our lives.  The thing these huge media giants don’t want the public to know and more importantly to comprehend, is that on their payroll… exist overly paid and extremely smart “psychologists”, whose job it is to help them design & build they’re powerful gigging lights.

There is an insanity today permeating and poisoning the human mind, weakening the spirit and hampering the growth of our souls.  For those caught in its web, there is an incessant desire to get more; an almost insatiable hankering for the next bit of sensation, drama, and appeal.  People everywhere are unconsciously driven to spend hours of their day, living in someone else’s virtual reality.  The channels for this are endless, and the means are material based at nearly every turn.  Let’s dissect a few:

Reality TV:  There is The Bachelor who is so highly motivated to become the next heartthrob of millions of people, that he spends every waking hour to obtain his position as The Bachelor so that he may dwell in their homes and minds as what he and others would hope to be the next American Prince of Perfection in all ways.  This man, for this show… becomes flawless in almost every way.  Physically, he is sexually appealing; his hair, his eyes, the structure of his face… his body – the color of his skin, his accent and distinct voice tone.  Emotionally, he is every womans night in shining armor; his responses are perfect in every way.  His touch with all its emotion is as gentle and warm as the sun on your skin.  He becomes desire.  He is what hundreds of women actually get the chance to physically mate with, pairing down to just 12… then 11, and 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and finally the one.  In a dramatic chain of premeditated events, each carefully drafted by writers and producers… the viewer is enchanted and enticed every step of the way – while unconsciously soaking up every bit of highly funded piece of advertisement that burns up those few nail biting moments in between each overly dramatized ”next step”. (For those that do own one and utilize it to get past all that propaganda…props you & your DVR) Do a small bit of research, and one will discover that what takes place in the land of reality… outside the cameras – is a far different world.  After the smoke has cleared and the mirrors lay shattered… the lives of these people takes on their natural human form… complete with vices, and imperfections.  The reality of this reality is that none of it is reality.  The people on these type shows will 99.999% of the time not end up married happily for the remainder of their lives.  That’s the reality.

Drama TV:  One of the more devastating effects on everyday life with these type TV shows is the insane fantasies placed in the minds of those watching it.  The expectations are set for normal, real life to fail.  Take for example the real life husband (whom we’ll call Mr. Real) who gets caught up in the drama show life of the TV family husband (who we’ll call Mr. Right) who has got it so together… he doesn’t miss a beat – he’s always on target.  The real life family man, Mr. Real – begins to live vicariously through Mr. Right on TV… and begins to slack on his own duties & responsibilities.  The plot thickens… and Mr. Right’s wife who isn’t living up to his expectations because of carefully scripted character flaws begins to fall short of being perfect; and in turn has a direct affect on Mr. Real’s relationship with his wife.  He unconsciously spites her for something that had he never engaged in the virtual reality drama television… he would have never recognized as something negative in her to begin with.  This one very short example, manifests in the lives of everyday people all over the world in a hundred thousand different ways – because of the hundred thousand different virtual realities dreamt up and played out in one of the hundred thousand different TV dramas on television.  Unconscionably, these very shows are fervently destroying family life all around the globe.  The disgusting thing is that many of these shows promote divorce and affairs through their extremely unhealthy & unethical acts played out into our homes.  Does this stuff happen in real life?  You bet it does… every day and some as a direct result of this overloaded junk.  But of course the devils advocate will preach that what’s being portrayed is only “reality” in the form of story.  Well sure… but why not instead promote a happy family life – full of great virtues and necessities for family’s to grow closer together – instead of break them apart.  The fact is that many people admire actors and actresses… regardless of what may be going on in their non-public, non-facaded lives.  Some people actually believe in the virtual reality, even via the tabloid junk.  Few ever get a glimpse of the real world.

Non-Public News: Don’t be fooled… an agenda is always at hand.  On the right, you have Rupert Murdoch & the cast of News Corp with is subsidiaries like FOX, Harper Collins, The New York Post, & The Dow Jones Company – to name merely a few… and those are only a handful they own in the United States.  Then you’ve got Time Warner… who owns Turner Broadcasting, who owns CNN, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and the list just goes on.  It’s really amazing when you get into looking at the “who owns who” lists; you’ll begin to see their pushing pattens. Eventually the matrix unfolds before your eyes and you become aware.  Once you’re conscious to the hype – the consciousness-vacuum seems to lose hold and balance returns.  The talking heads are everywhere…just use a good filter & hold your course.

A few others to beware of…

  • Non-Public Radio:  Radio personalities are some of the most persuasive individuals out there.  Be mindful of what you’re listening to.
  • Tabloids & Magazines:  Don’t waste your money on them.  If you do… just laugh and let it go…  then use them for fuel and burn them :)
  • Video Games:  If you’re into it… rock on – enjoy some gaming. Don’t let it consume your life.  There are support groups… http://www.olganon.org/ http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Video-Game-Addiction/support-group http://organizedwisdom.com/Video_Game_Addiction_Support_Groups
  • Prime Time Sports / Fantasy Sports:  Exercise more.
  • Gambling: Yes, this has actually become a reality TV sport.
  • UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship): Must we go there?
  • Social Networks: Facebook, MySpace, Twitter.  Meet, greet, share… just don’t live there.

Who Owns The Media

If you really want to dig… here’s the most up to date and all-inclusive source I’ve found.

Some other stuff…

On an optimistic note, I will say that I am seeing a slow but progressively more positive spin occurring with the “media maddess” of late.  I believe it is a bit premature to go into much detail on my thoughts regarding this… but regardless here’s the gist & time will tell.

911 brought with it a new fear that the United States and the world has never known.  This fear permeated everything to the core.  Our values and belief systems changed.  Negativity grew out of control.  Reality TV, hype and fanaticism went haywire.  Comedy turned dark & so did drama.  The “darkside” was overpowering the “Force” at nearly every turn… and the majority just accepted it.  So, back to my optimistic point – I think we’re coming out of that dark decade and a newer, brighter horizon is in front of us.  I’m hopeful; it seems to me the majority is on board.  So in the words of Mr. Mayfield… “People Get Ready….”

And yes, I realize how opinionated I am on this topic – and am obviously heavily weighted in one direction.  If by chance you happen to be on the same page with where I’m headed… or think you might just maybe have a slight interest in the possibility of there being some truth to what I’m saying… I’d like to offer up some solutions to the “media madness”. Take it for what it’s worth, it’s only my opinion.  There is some really healthy media to be had.  So again – let’s dissect a few:

  • TED Talkshttp://www.ted.com/ – A deluge of inspiring, educational & engaging information.
  • Your Public Libraryhttp://www.publiclibraries.com/ – Check it out; I promise you’ll be impressed.  Beyond books – there is music, movies, & audio books.  They’re great!
  • PBShttp://www.pbs.org/ – Good Media; plain & simple.
  • Nogginhttp://www.nickjr.com/about/noggin-nickjr.html – Turn off the Disney channel for your children… trust me on this one.
  • WPR’s Ideas Networkhttp://www.wpr.org/ideas/ – Engaging Radio.  If you have internet you can stream it.  If you have an iPhone, download the “Public Radio” app and add the channel as a favorite.  I stream this channel via the iPhone in my car using the Auxiliary jack. (If you dig music, there are hundreds of excellent public radio stations out there streaming new and different music all day.  You can find them with this app.)

The truth is I don’t have a whole ton offer in this arena.  I’m fairly withdrawn when it comes to this stuff.  I’m sure there’s a lot more out there; please share your thoughts & opinions.  If you have suggestions for “Healthy Media”… please post those too.
